Italian Article of the Day

Taken in 2013, Annamaria Cancellieri (left), Cecile Kyenge (center), and Giorgio Napolitano (right), at the swear-in for Italy’s first black Minister. Kyenge has taken a stand against racism, abuse, and the suffering that has consistently occurred in the EU (European Union). She is backed by many supporters though has received many death threats and hate speech followed by repetitive abuse. She’s under police protection and does insist that international treaties do not deem hate speech as “freedom of speech” in which I agree with her. It is a target for others to incite violence and hate. Given the diversity in the EU now, Kyenge is fighting non-stop to to respect and uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals based on the EU being founded on the shared values of liberty, democracy, and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Tomorrow she will be addressing a conference in the House of Commons against racism, xenophobia, and other forms of intolerance. GO Kyenge!
